AMD Unveils FidelityFX Super Resolution 3: A Game-Changer for Gamers

AMD

After months of anticipation, AMD has finally revealed more details about its highly anticipated FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3). This groundbreaking technology combines AMD’s FSR upscaling with Fluid Motion Frames, resulting in a significant boost in frame rates. The best part? It works with any GPU!

Unlike Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling 3 (DLSS 3), which is limited to Nvidia RTX GPUs from the most recent generation, AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames is compatible with GPUs from the original RDNA generation (RX 5000) and newer. This inclusive approach sets AMD apart and opens up exciting possibilities for gamers across different hardware platforms.

During a recent demonstration in the game Forspoken, AMD showcased the power of FSR 3 with the newly announced RX 7800 XT. The game’s frame rate skyrocketed from 36 frames per second (fps) to an impressive 122 fps at 4K resolution with the highest quality ray tracing preset. This nearly quadrupled frame rate is a game-changer for gamers seeking smoother gameplay experiences.

However, the ultimate test lies in the image quality. While AMD’s open support approach is commendable, Nvidia’s DLSS, with its dedicated AI hardware, has been known to deliver superior image quality. It remains to be seen if AMD can match or surpass Nvidia in this aspect, especially with Fluid Motion Frames. Even Nvidia’s DLSS Frame Generation struggles with artifacts despite its AI capabilities.

Speaking of Fluid Motion Frames, this technology utilizes frame interpolation to insert a frame between two rendered frames, effectively doubling performance. Alongside FSR 3, AMD is also introducing Native AA mode, similar to Nvidia’s DLAA, which combines the sharpening and anti-aliasing properties of FSR while rendering games at native resolution.

AMD

Excitingly, we won’t have to wait long to witness FSR 3 in action. AMD has confirmed that the feature will be launched in Immortals of Aveum and Forspoken through patches in September. While an exact date is yet to be announced, gamers can look forward to experiencing the power of FSR 3 in these highly anticipated titles.

AMD has an impressive lineup of games that will eventually integrate FSR 3. Some of the confirmed titles include Immortals of Aveum, Forspoken, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, Cyberpunk 2077, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II, Frostpunk 2, Alters, Squad, StarTroopers Extermination, Black Myth Wukong, Crimson Desert, and Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth. Additionally, AMD has announced partnerships with Square Enix, Sega, CD Projekt Red, and more, along with an FSR 3 plugin for Unreal Engine.

It’s important to note that FSR 3 requires developer integration, so the timeline for its implementation in more games remains uncertain. However, AMD has a solution in the works. HYPR-RX, announced alongside FSR 3 last November, promises a one-click performance boost through AMD Software. This feature automatically optimizes game settings for the best performance, and it will also include Fluid Motion Frames in a future update.

AMD

While we eagerly await the arrival of FSR 3, it’s important to acknowledge that without AI-driven technology, it’s challenging to predict the final image quality and performance. Nvidia has also made strides in this area with its DLSS 3.5 update, introducing the Ray Reconstruction feature to the RTX suite. The competition between AMD and Nvidia continues to push the boundaries of gaming technology, ultimately benefiting gamers worldwide.

In conclusion, AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 is poised to revolutionize gaming by delivering impressive frame rate boosts and improved image quality. With its inclusive GPU compatibility and exciting partnerships, AMD is solidifying its position as a key player in the gaming industry. As we eagerly await the release of FSR 3, gamers can look forward to a more immersive and enjoyable gaming experience on a wide range of hardware configurations.
