Apple enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting the release of the new iPhone 15 lineup, and the latest rumor surrounding the much-anticipated smartphone is causing quite a stir. According to Twitter leaker Kosutami, Apple may offer a USB-C data transfer accessory cable for iPhone 15 Pro models that is capable of Thunderbolt or USB4 speeds of up to 40Gbps.

This rumored cable, which is said to have a length of 0.8 meters, shorter than Apple’s existing Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable (1.8m), is also said to support charging up to 150W. If true, this would be a significant improvement over Apple’s current Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable which supports 100W charging. However, it’s important to note that the charging capability of the cable does not necessarily mean the iPhone 15 Pro models will be capable of charging at this speed.

There has been a lot of speculation about which port standard Apple will use in its premium iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max devices to potentially differentiate them further from the more affordable iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously suggested that the iPhone 15 Pro models would support “at least” USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3. However, the leaked USB4 cable is based on the Thunderbolt 4 protocol, offering faster speeds of 40Gbps, twice the preceding USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard.

The switch to USB-C across all iPhone 15 models has sparked rumors about the USB-C port capabilities of the entire lineup. Reports suggest that the cables supplied with the iPhone 15 boxes are limited to USB 2.0 data transfer speeds at a rate of 480 Mbps, which is the same as the Lightning cable currently used. In contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to be supplied with cables capable of USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3 transfer speeds, as per Kuo’s original claim.

Images from ChargerLab also support the rumor of higher-speed data transfer for the iPhone 15 Pro models. These images appear to show a Thunderbolt/USB4 retimer chip in some iPhone 15 models, further indicating the inclusion of higher-speed data transfer capabilities.

In addition to the speed improvements, reports suggest that each iPhone 15 model will come with a braided USB-C charging cable in the box. This cable is said to be thicker and 50% longer than the Lightning cable that comes with current iPhone models, suggesting increased durability. Furthermore, the cables are rumored to be color-matched to the possible new iPhone colors, including black, white, yellow, blue, and orange.

The anticipation for the iPhone 15 lineup continues to build, with Apple scheduled to announce the new devices at an event expected to be held on September 12. As the rumors circulate and leaks surface, excitement grows for the potential features and capabilities of Apple’s latest flagship smartphones. Whether the USB-C Thunderbolt cable will become a reality for the iPhone 15 Pro models remains to be seen, but it certainly adds to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming release. Stay tuned for more updates as we eagerly await Apple’s official announcement.
