The comfort of a headset is crucial for prolonged use, and it varies from person to person. As someone with a larger-than-usual head and voluminous hair, finding a headset that won’t slip or cause discomfort is challenging. When I tried on the Apple Vision Pro, it initially seemed comfortable, thanks to the wide and soft strap. However, after 15 minutes, I started to feel weighed down and experienced pain. To their credit, Apple quickly switched the strap to a two-loop design that provided better weight distribution and alleviated the discomfort. The Vision Pro offers a variety of strap options and adaptability, ensuring a personalized fit for everyone.

Dana: A Fitting Endeavor

As I embarked on the fitting process, I worried that I was doing something wrong or that my head was simply unfittable. Adjusting the straps to sharpen the display added a slight pinch on my nose. Sitting in the center of Apple Immersive and spatial videos, I felt like Jimmy Stewart’s character in “It’s A Wonderful Life.” As I watched exclusive performances by Alicia Keys or observed a family’s mealtime in a spatial video, I simultaneously felt immersed and excluded. Although the videos were captivating, they lacked interaction with the viewer. Yet, these experiences evoked unexpected emotions, leaving me teary-eyed during an ordinary Apple briefing.

Cherlynn: A Kaleidoscope of Emotions

During my Immersive Video demo, Alicia Keys belted out a performance right in front of my eyes. However, it was the interaction with a family playing soccer with rhinos that surprised me the most. When the animals charged towards me, I physically recoiled. The attention to detail, from the texture of their skin to the reflection of the Apple logo on a lake’s surface, impressed me. While I didn’t have the same emotional experience as Dana, I understood how these videos could elicit a strong response.

Disney+ App: Where Imagination Takes the Wheel

The Disney+ app on the Vision Pro offers a personalized viewing experience reminiscent of choosing character backgrounds in video games. The level of realism was astonishing, with minute details like a Shawarma Grill takeout container on the table beside me. I could almost touch the handwritten note left behind by Tony Stark. Switching to the Tattooine environment, I found myself in the cockpit of Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder, complete with visible hands. While I couldn’t interact with the elements, it was a thrilling experience for a fan.

The floating keyboard, a feature not available in earlier demos, impressed me with its functionality. By using eye control to select keys, I could either tap my fingers together or physically lean forward and press the buttons. While typing on a virtual keyboard isn’t as seamless as using a physical one, it was thrilling to see it actually work. Apple’s eye- and hand-tracking systems accurately detected my intentions most of the time. Although the keyboard felt slightly out of reach, voice typing or the option to pair a Bluetooth keyboard provided viable alternatives for extended typing.

The typing options provided – finger tapping, eye control, or Siri – left much to be desired for extended use. Even spelling “ENBLE” correctly in the Safari demo took several tries. It was surprising since Apple is known for creating seamless, user-friendly experiences. However, the floating keyboard on the Vision Pro has room for improvement. As of now, it’s challenging to imagine using the headset for productive work. Yet, the Vision Pro excels in its role as a personal home theater.

As someone familiar with meditation apps, I was pleasantly surprised by the Vision Pro’s meditation experience. In a serene environment, I watched as a cloud burst into tiny “leaves” that floated around me. Guided by soft, comforting music, I felt completely enveloped in a calming ambiance. The Vision Pro proved to be the perfect vessel for meditation, allowing users to block out distractions and truly focus on their breathing.

The brief meditation demo left me wanting more. The dark environment with floating 3D objects and prompts to practice gratitude was tantalizingly peaceful. Although the demo lasted only a minute, I could have easily spent more time exploring this tranquil realm.

Throughout my career, I’ve covered various demonstrations involving butterflies and dinosaurs. I had heard others recount their experiences of butterflies landing on their fingers during the Vision Pro demo, followed by the eruption of dinosaurs bursting out of screens. This realistic and impressive technological feat showcased the Vision Pro’s ability to accurately track finger positions. However, as someone with an aversion to butterflies, watching them land on my finger was traumatic. Despite the initial discomfort, the subsequent encounter with a cute baby dinosaur and interacting with ferocious dinosaurs proved to be thrilling and remarkably realistic.

Dana: Embracing Foolishness

Unlike Cherlynn, I managed to contain my fear but made a fool of myself nevertheless. When I beckoned one of the dinosaurs, it walked right up to me and made a loud noise in my face. I even timidly “petted” it before it retreated. Another dinosaur appeared, but my attempts to get its attention were fruitless. As the demo concluded, I waved and unintentionally said “bye bye” (a result of living with a toddler). Only then did I remember the other adults observing my headset antics. The Vision Pro experience, much like any high-quality VR headset, is so immersive that it’s easy to let go of inhibitions.

Final (ish) Thoughts: A Visionary Device with a Pricey Tag

Cherlynn: Impressed but Unconvinced

Having eagerly anticipated trying the Vision Pro, I was mostly satisfied with its performance. The accurate eye- and hand-tracking systems allowed me to navigate the interface effortlessly. However, as mind-blowing as the experience was, I’m not convinced of its practicality for long hours of use. Considering its hefty $3,500 price tag, it’s out of my budget. Nevertheless, of all the headsets I’ve tried, the Vision Pro is by far the most refined and meticulously designed. It even showcases what others see when you’re using the device, further augmenting the immersive experience.

Dana: Joyous Moments

The Vision Pro exceeded my expectations in terms of usability. While it has the potential to be an all-purpose device for web browsing and industrial applications, its true strength lies in offering a euphoric movie-watching experience. Although Apple isn’t the first to create an immersive headset, it certainly stands out in terms of quality. Using the Vision Pro, particularly with photo and video apps, brought me immense joy. Ultimately, the decision to invest $3,500 in this much fun rests with the individual user.
