Introducing Motorola’s Futuristic Wrist Phone Concept 📱⌚

Let's be real, you've been wanting a wrist phone forever.

Motorola’s new concept has brought my dream wrist phone to life!

I envy Futurama’s Leela for many reasons; her awesome boots, purple hair, and the fact that she gets paid to ride around on a spaceship. But what really caught my attention was her wrist-mounted smart device. And guess what? Motorola has just unveiled a concept that brings us one step closer to Leela’s futuristic gauntlet! 🚀

Motorola’s latest concept is a phone that can seamlessly transition from a regular, flat candy bar-style device to a wrist-worn wonder. They call it the “adaptive display concept,” and I got to experience it firsthand at this year’s Mobile World Congress. Here’s how it works: initially, the phone looks like any other Android device, but the back is covered in fabric for maximum comfort. You can use it as you would any smartphone, swiping around and Instagramming to your heart’s content.

But when you’re ready for the magic to happen, you simply bend the phone until it forms an arch and slide it onto your wrist. Amazing, right? You’ll already be wearing a magnetic strap on your wrist, similar to an Apple Watch’s Milanese Loop band, which the phone magnetically attaches to, ensuring it stays securely in place. From this point on, the phone acts more like a smartwatch, displaying incoming notifications and providing easy access to essential functions. When you want to use it as a phone again, just remove it from your wrist, fold it flat, and you’re good to go. Voilà! 💁‍♂️

Not only does this concept offer a unique way to wear your phone, but it also doubles as a handy kickstand. By folding the phone in a certain way, it transforms into its own stand, allowing for convenient video calls without requiring any additional accessories. Now, that’s versatility! 🤩

While I was quite excited to try on Motorola’s concept, it’s important to note that this is still firmly in the proof-of-concept stage. There’s still a long way to go before this becomes a real product, if it ever does. There are a few aspects I’d like to see improved before considering a purchase. For one, I would prefer the phone to have a more flexible design that allows it to completely wrap around the wrist, eliminating the need for a separate magnetic strap. Additionally, I’d like to see a slimmer profile that feels less intrusive when worn. And of course, software optimizations would be essential to make the most out of this unique form factor. Hey, I’m demanding, but if I’m going to wear a phone on my wrist, it has to offer something truly valuable over a regular smartwatch. 💪

Unfortunately, my expectations for seeing this product on the market anytime soon aren’t very high. In the past, Motorola showcased another concept phone with a screen that magically extended upward for a larger viewing space. As cool as it was, Motorola hasn’t shown any commitment towards making it a reality. So, whether this wrist phone concept will make it to the shops remains to be seen. 🤔
