Microsoft to launch all-digital Xbox Series X and new gyro controller in major leak.

Microsoft’s Surprise: A New Xbox Series X Design and Controller Leaked

It seems that Microsoft has some secrets up its sleeve when it comes to the future of gaming. In a surprising turn of events, a document from the FTC v. Microsoft court battle has accidentally revealed plans for a mid-generation refresh of the Xbox Series X. Not only that, but it also leaked details about a new controller and a refreshed Xbox Series S, giving us a glimpse into Microsoft’s gaming strategy well in advance.

According to the document, Microsoft is working on three new consoles. The first one, codenamed Ellewood, is a light refresh of the Xbox Series S and is set to arrive in September 2024. Following that, in November 2024, we can expect “Brooklin,” a new disc-less version of the Xbox Series X. Interestingly, there is also another model called XDL, which matches Brooklin’s specs but will likely offer Xbox Design Lab customization.

But let’s talk about the star of the leak – the new updated Xbox Series X console. While Microsoft describes it as “adorable” due to its cylindrical design, many gamers may not find the lack of a disc cute at all. However, the new design brings some exciting features along with it.

The updated Series X will boast Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and a USB-C front port. Additionally, it will have an all-new southbridge to modernize IO and sustainability efforts. With a 6-nanometer die shrink, the console will consume 15 percent less power and introduce a new low-power standby mode that draws up to 80 percent less power than the current standby mode. And let’s not forget about the increased use of recycled plastic and 100 percent recycled packaging, emphasizing Microsoft’s commitment to sustainability.

In terms of storage, the new Xbox Series X will come with a 2TB capacity, double that of the current model. And to sweeten the deal, it will include the new Sebile controller as standard. Microsoft also assures us that the price will be the same as the current Xbox Series X, priced at $499 when it arrives (tentatively November 2024). However, it’s worth noting that this new iteration lacks a disc drive, which might disappoint some users who prefer physical copies of their games.

Moving on to the controller, the leaked document uncovered a new Xbox controller codenamed Sebile, which offers some exciting features. This two-tone controller comes with a built-in accelerometer and haptics that “double as speakers,” reminiscent of Sony’s latest DualSense controller. It also features new modular thumbsticks, quieter buttons and thumbsticks, and new app features. Furthermore, it introduces some sustainability improvements like a swappable battery, the use of recycled materials, and improved reparability. With the gyro support, users will be able to maneuver in games simply by moving the controller around. Microsoft is also planning an XDL version of the Sebile controller, codenamed Igraine.

While this leak has provided us with intriguing information about Microsoft’s upcoming gaming lineup, it also raises questions about how these documents came into public view. Regardless of how they were exposed, it is undeniable that this leak could have negative consequences for Xbox’s gaming business, as it reveals the company’s strategy well over a year in advance.

The leaked document dives into more details, including projected sales volumes, margins, and funding, which Microsoft would undoubtedly prefer to keep private. For instance, the document outlines a “path to leadership in gaming” with a vision of cloud-first, PC-first, and console-first Xbox Game Pass subscription numbers. This unintended disclosure is likely to have severe consequences for Microsoft, but only time will tell how the fallout unfolds.

So, for all the Xbox fans out there, stay tuned for more updates on the exciting future of gaming with Microsoft’s upcoming consoles and controllers.
